H.E. Mr Giles Portman, British Ambassador to Romania, and Mrs Lucie Portman invited over 300 guests to their Residence.

On 4 June, the British Residence in Bucharest became the setting for an evening that was never simply about fashion. Diplomacy in Fashion was about creativity, friendship, courage, cultural diplomacy and the special bond between Romania and the United Kingdom. It brought together British and Romanian designers, professional models, VIP celebrity models, artists, journalists, sports personalities and cultural figures for an unforgettable celebration of style and spirit.

The vision behind the project was simple: to support Romanian designers beyond the borders of Romania, to create a bridge to London, and to use fashion as a language of friendship between two countries. Fashion is never just about clothes. It is about identity, storytelling, craftsmanship, heritage and imagination. It is also a powerful way to open doors where formal diplomacy sometimes cannot.

“Diplomacy in Fashion” is a cultural diplomacy effort that goes beyond the traditional world of diplomacy. It brings together the United Kingdom and Romania in a fresh, human and vibrant way, celebrating the friendship between our two beautiful countries. It shows that diplomacy can happen through fabric, embroidery, silhouette, elegance and beauty — backstage, in a garden, on a runway, under a stormy sky, and in the shared determination of people who decide that the show must go on.

The event was supported by Cristina Bâtlan and organised by Modern Owners, whose energy, vision and professionalism helped bring this ambitious project to life. Their support was essential in creating an evening that combined fashion, cultural diplomacy, community and friendship in such a memorable way.

The brief given to the designers was clear and imaginative. Each designer was invited to create two looks: one iconic look representing their own creative identity, and one look with a “touch of Britishness”. These creations were then presented by one professional model and one VIP celebrity model from the worlds of film, sport, journalism, art and culture. This gave the show a very special energy. It was not a conventional fashion presentation, but a gathering of personalities, stories and friendships.

The designers responded with extraordinary imagination. Their creations were magnificent: dramatic, elegant, witty, romantic, architectural, bold and deeply personal. Some looks played with British references, others with Romanian craft and heritage, and many created a fascinating dialogue between the two. The “touch of Britishness” appeared in many forms — through tailoring, tartan, structure, attitude, eccentricity, restraint or rebellion.

A huge thank you must go to the 27 amazing British and Romanian designers whose extraordinary creations were admired throughout the evening. Their talent, vision and generosity made the event possible. They brought beauty, originality and imagination to the Residence, and through their work they told stories of culture, identity and connection.

The evening was also the beginning of a longer journey. One creation from each designer will form part of an exhibition in London at the Romanian Cultural Institute in September, coinciding with London Fashion Week. The aim is clear: to take Romanian creativity beyond Romania’s borders, to place it in conversation with London’s fashion world, and to give these designers the visibility and recognition they so richly deserve. Already, that conversation is growing, with close to a million views on the Diplomacy in Fashion Instagram page.

Backstage, the atmosphere was remarkable. There was excitement, laughter, nerves, generosity and a real sense of shared purpose. Designers helped models. Models encouraged one another. VIP participants, many of whom were stepping outside their usual worlds, embraced the experience with enthusiasm and grace. Everyone wanted the project to succeed, not just for themselves, but for the wider idea behind it.

And then it rained.

In fact, it poured.

What could have been a disaster became the defining moment of the evening. Under a thundery Bucharest sky, with rain falling heavily over the Residence garden, the show continued. The atmosphere changed, but it did not diminish. The rain brought drama, emotion and a strange kind of beauty. The creations came alive in a new way. The models walked with even greater determination. The whole evening became charged with something unforgettable.

The VIP models deserve a very special thank you. They stood together in friendship and solidarity, determined to finish the show despite the weather. Their courage, humour and elegance created a real bond on the runway. They represented the best of community spirit: people coming together not because everything was perfect, but because something mattered enough to continue.

There was something very Romanian about the way the evening unfolded. The rain came, the sky darkened, the situation became difficult — and yet people stayed, adapted, laughed, helped and carried on. That resilience, warmth and emotional generosity are part of what makes Romania so special, and what makes it such a privilege to call Romania home.

The evening was full of beautiful emotions: love, friendship, drama, pride and gratitude. It had glamour, but also sincerity. It had elegance, but also heart. It had thunder, rain and beautiful clothes moving through a garden that had suddenly become cinematic.

Diplomacy in Fashion at the British Residence was a celebration of style, but also of friendship. It celebrated Romania and the United Kingdom, two countries connected through creativity, respect and affection. Above all, it celebrated the spirit of a community that chose not to stop when the rain came, but to walk through it — beautifully, proudly and together.
